Eneco new Main Partner for Flanders Classics spring classics

With less than a month to go until the opening classic Omloop het Nieuwsblad, Flanders Classics announces a new collaboration. Eneco, an ambitious energy supplier, is becoming Main Partner of the Flanders Classics spring classics. This partnership is part of a broader plan in which Flanders Classics, in collaboration with Eneco, aims to make its events and cycling more sustainable.

The new spring season is just around the corner and, this year, Eneco will be involved as one of the Main Partners in the campaign. Under a three-year agreement with Flanders Classics, the energy supplier will support both the men’s and women’s races in the six spring classics: Omloop Nieuwsblad, Gent-Wevelgem in Flanders Fields, Dwars door Vlaanderen, Tour of Flanders, Scheldeprijs and De Brabantse Pijl.

Tomas Van Den Spiegel, CEO of Flanders Classics: “We are very much looking forward to this collaboration. Together with Eneco, we intend to take things to the next level and make our races greener and more sustainable. Back in 2022, we signed the UCI Climate Action Charter affirming our ambition to become climate neutral. In 2025 we start our road to reach that goal by 2035. This transition will follow a structured plan, implemented step by step over the coming years. With Eneco at our side, we are exploring precisely what those steps are and in what order they should be rolled out. But one thing is certain: from 2025 onwards, we will be putting even greater emphasis on sustainability.”

“At Eneco, we want to be climate neutral by 2035. Not only with our own operations and our own facilities, but also with our customers. That is a major challenge,” said Bert Clinckers, managing director of Eneco Belgium. “Flanders Classics - as the organiser of the biggest Belgian races - has this challenge as too. So we are very happy to work with organisations that share our sustainable vision and want to make it a reality together with us.”

Greener racing

Last year, as part of EK Limburg 2024 vzw, Flanders Classics organised the 2024 UEC Road European Championships in Limburg, with Hasselt and Heusden-Zolder as the host cities. Sustainability was one of the core values of that event, for which a comprehensive sustainability plan was rolled out. Spread over 10 themes, that plan was made up of 100 action points, some of which were more physically evident than others.

That plan, which is part of the legacy of the European Cycling Championships, is now being used as a blueprint. In other words, it will serve as the foundation for the future sustainability plans of other Flanders Classics events.

Tomas Van Den Spiegel, CEO of Flanders Classics: “Limburg 2024 was a big step in the right direction. A Greener Future, commissioned by the Flemish Government, conducted an impact assessment of the event. Based on their report, we recently received news that the 2024 UEC Road European Championships will be awarded an AGF certificate in the ‘Improvers’ category. This places us, as a sporting event, in a prestigious line-up alongside major international festivals and gives us an excellent foundation to refine our sustainability strategy for the years ahead. We are absolutely delighted to do this with Eneco by our side.”
